Alaminos was conferred the “Best LGU Initiated Environmental Project Award” for its pioneering efforts in the conservation, protection and rehabilitation of its vast ecosystem and rich natural resources.

City administrator Wilmer Panabang received the said award on behalf of the city during the Closing and Awarding Ceremonies of the 2010 Environment Month Celebration held in San Fernando City, La Union.

The prestigious award was given a day before the inauguration of Mayor Braganza as the first-ever three termer city mayor of Alaminos.

“(With this award) Alaminos cemented its status as one of the leading environmental champions in Region I,” said Panabang.

“This will further inspire our citymates and our local officials to rally behind the programs of the city for the continued protection and sustainable development of our marine environment and vast ecosystem,” he added.

It was in fact a twin feat for the city as the Alaminos City National High School (ACNHS) was also bestowed the “Most Outstanding School Environmental Outreach Program Award”.

ACNHS headed by Dr. Gloria Reinoso, Principal IV, bagged the award for successfully initiating and implementing environmental projects and programs in the school and in the community geared towards environmental protection and sustainable development.

Alaminos was also cited for its superb fishery laws enforcement and the utmost promotion of its eco-tourism thrusts which are guided on the principles of pro-active, participatory, good governance and excellent leadership.

Braganza, who earned him the moniker "environmental mayor”, for getting the Hundred Islands back to the arms of the city government and for implementing a sustainable CRM program and in re-greening the city’s denuded mountains, has been hailed by various sectors in the city particularly the NGOs and local leaders for making environmental protection among his top priorities.

His laudable programs for the environment were designed to improve the quality of life of his citymates.

And he will continue on championing the city’s environment and natural resources knowing that this is God’s gift to mankind which needs to be conserved, protected and used wisely.(CIO)
