Braganza is League of Cities’ new sec.gen
Date: July 19 2010

The long-wait is over for the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP).

Alaminos City Mayor Hernani A. Braganza was elected un-opposed as LCP’s secretary general during last Saturday’s election of officers and general assembly held at Century Park Hotel in Pasay City.

Caloocan City Mayor Enrico Echiverri was voted as chairman while San Fernando City, Pampanga Mayor Oscar Rodriguez was elected as the league president.

Also elected vice president for the National Capital Region was Valenzuela City Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian.

Braganza and Echiverri are both partymates of President Benigno C. Aquino III under Liberal Party. These two former members of the famed “Spice Boys” are already on third and final term as chief executives of their respective cities.

LCP has 121 members and according to reports, majority of the mayors have agreed to support the youthful chief executive on his recommendation that the league should choose leaders who could unify all local executives and achieve reforms regardless of their political affiliations.

Braganza’s inclusion in the new LCP leadership ended more than six years of waiting by his peers who have constantly prodded him to seek the chairmanship or simply be one of their officers in the league.

The former Agrarian Reform top honcho and Press Secretary had been wooed twice by several camps to lead LCP to greater heights, but he refused.

He likewise turned-down calls from his friend and fellow city mayors to run for lower posts if he’s not yet prepared to be the league’s chairman.

Citing his vast experience as a leader, his political clout and his vision for the LGUs in the country, he may have been one of the best leaders the LCP have ever had.

But the hardworking city mayor decided that the powerful organization would just have to wait. He though made it a point to extend his utmost support to the league’s current officers.

Instead of eyeing key positions in the LCP, he decided to stay and serve his citymates to the best he can.

Braganza, also a former two-term congressman of the first district of Pangasinan, devoted most of his time, energy and brand of leadership in nurturing his city of birth and turning it into an ultimate eco-tourist destination and one of the fastest growing economies in Northern Luzon if not in the whole country.

He made sure that all of his laudable programs and noble vision which were articulated in his administration’s 10-Point Development Agenda are fully realized during his watch.

These include the completion of four landmark projects namely the Alaminos Airport Project, Hundred Islands Medical Services Complex, PSU-Alaminos City Campus and the Alaminos Hotel.

Until the perfect time has finally come.

His availability now to be of greater service again to the national government is seen as a major boost to the Aquino administration which main goal is to restore peoples’ trust to the government and bring about improved quality of life for his countrymen.

Meanwhile, seasoned alderman Joselito Fontelera is set to sponsor a resolution at the city council extending the august body and the Alaminians’ warmest congratulations to the hardworking city mayor for being elected LCP Secretary General.

“Mayor Braganza is one of the prized sons of our city and being a true bloodied Alaminian, we felt so elated and very proud of his latest remarkable feat,” said the son of former city mayor Eduardo Fontelera. (CIO)
