It used to be a sitio of Barangay Alos and formally became independent on November 14, 1984.

During the American regime, a team of explorers came. As they walked along a wooded and grassy trail, they met a big cow, loudly mooing, “M-a-a-a“. The inhabitants didn't know the name of the place either so they ended up naming it “M-a-a-a away” which was derived from the loud cry of the cow (m-a-a-a) and “away” from driving the cow away. This up to now is the registered name of the place, changing only in spelling, Maawi (others still use the syllabication “Maaoi” owing to Spanish influence).
